Clean water is an essential part of life. Humans, animals and even insects need a continual supply of clean water to stay healthy. However, a surprising number of people have been making due with contaminated water. Estimates suggest that up to a quarter of homes in the US have contaminated water supplies. What's worse is that it's often quite difficult to know if we've been drinking clean water or not.
One of the best ways to know that you're drinking clean water is to use a higher quality water filter. For example, a berkey water filter can remove both chemical and biological contaminants from your water supply. Many lower quality water filters only remove a single form of potential contamination. For example, some filters only remove heavy metals. Other filter systems might only work on bacteria.
However, we often find that where there's one form of contamination there's many more as well. The same issues which can make a water supply vulnerable to bacterial contamination might also open the way for parasitic agents. Additionally, new problems often show up over time. A family might buy a water filter to deal with one specific type of contaminant such as E. coli. But over time a secondary factor might arise which their filter isn't capable of dealing with. A higher quality filter which can take care of multiple issues will help people stay safe no matter what the future might hold.
The same problem applies to households whose water supply isn't contaminated. They might not have anything to worry about at the moment. But their water could end up contaminated at any point in the future. And the household probably wouldn't even notice a difference in their water as it went from clean to contaminated. This is another reason why water filters are such an important part of water safety. The filters act as an agent to clean contaminated water. But filters are also an excellent way of ensuring that water doesn't become contaminated in the future.
Higher quality water filters are easily the best way to ensure you're drinking clean water. The biggest issue with drinking water is that even contaminated water usually looks and smells fine. If milk or fruit juice goes bad we usually know it before taking that first sip. And if the smell and appearance doesn't alert us to the fact that something's wrong then the taste most certainly will. But this is far from the case with water.
Water is typically contaminated by elements which don't impact its taste or appearance. Bacteria, pharmaceuticals, heavy metals and even pesticides are typically invisible in water. All of these elements can cause significant problems over time. For example,cholera is often caused by contaminated drinking water. The situation is made even worse by the difficulty in tracking an illness back to a home's drinking water.
There are some other approaches to clean drinking water. However, most of them come with significant issues. Many people are used to boiling drinking water when they're camping. And this strategy can be done at home as well. Most bacterial and viral contaminants can't survive boiling temperatures. But at the same time other contaminants such as heavy metals, pesticides or other chemicals will remain in water even after it's boiled.
However, the biggest issue with boiling water is simply how long it takes. The average adult needs to drink about 12 to 16 cups of water per day. It's easy enough to do that when we're taking a vacation to camp in the woods. But it's a whole other matter to suggest that we boil up to 16 cups of water every day.
We see a similar problem with bottled water. Bottled water is a great solution when we find ourselves out and about. But the costs associated with drinking 16 cups of bottled water a day would build up at a rapid pace. What's more, drinking that much bottled water would also have a significant environmental footprint.
In the end we've been able to see a few different ways of handling water purity. We've also looked at how to balance ease of use, environmental and economic concerns with water quality. High quality water filters are the clear winner when it comes to ensuring a supply of clean drinking water.
Water filters take care of the difficulties posed by invisible contaminants. We don't need to manually detect any given contaminant when a higher quality filter can take care of them all. What's more, a water filter is a one time cost. This makes it more economical than buying bottled water. And finally, water filters integrate into a home's water supply. This means that it operates all on its own without the user having to ever give it much thought on a day to day basis
