A Personal Experiment Using Cloves For Their Natural Health Benefits

By S.E. Gunn, PhDAll News Pipeline

I found the video (posted at the bottom of this article) about 2 weeks ago. I found it interesting, so I posted it in the forum. The general response was "you try it and tell us about it." So, I tried it and here are my results.

A little background info on cloves

Clove’s eugenol doesn’t just numb – it dramatically reduces the inflammatory cytokines destroying your joints and causing your pain. Studies on rheumatoid arthritis patients showed jaw-dropping reductions in inflammation markers. (from The Lost Herbs newsletter from November 21, 2025 (contact The Lost Herbs via email to subscribe))

Wikipedia tells us cloves are the flower buds of trees native to Maluku Islands, or Moluccas, in Indonesia. Cloves are commonly used as a spice, flavoring, or fragrance in consumer products such as toothpaste, soaps, or cosmetics. Clove trees are evergreens that grows as tall as 39 feet with large leaves and red flowers. Cloves are the dried flower buds:

Cloves are used in a variety of cuisines (Asian, African,, Mediterranean, Near & Middle East, Mexican, and Peruvian to name a few) as they pair well with cinnamon, allspice, vanilla, red wine, basil, onion, citrus peel, star anise, and peppercorns.

On the medical side of things

Drugs.com warns that the FDA has not approved for medical use at this time. They name hives, difficult breathing, swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat as signs of allergic reaction. They caution you to seek healthcare if you experience severe burning, redness, pain, or swelling after using cloves on your skin. In addition, they list the following severe & common side effects:

Severe: lactic acidosis (muscle pain or weakness, numbness or cold feeling in arms or legs, trouble breathing, stomach pain, nausea with vomiting, fast or uneven heart rate, dizziness, or feeling very weak or tired); liver problems (nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, tired feeling, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes)); or signs of infection (fever, chills, sore throat, mouth sores, cold or flu symptoms, cough, trouble breathing).

Common: erection problems; trouble having an orgasm (delayed ejaculation); itching, rash; mild skin irritation; or sore gums, mouth irritation, bleeding or swollen gums, or tooth changes after using clove inside the mouth.

Contraindications: Drugs.com also suggests you not use clove if you are allergic to clove; have liver disease; have a bleeding or blood clotting disorder such as hemophilia; a weak immune system; or plant  or food allergies. They suggest consulting your medical professional before use if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. They also state clove oil taken by mouth can cause liver damage, seizure/convulsions, or other serious side effects in children.

Drugs.com also suggests you avoid using clove together with other herbal/health supplements that can also affect blood-clotting. This includes angelica (dong quai), capsicum, danshen, garlic, ginger, ginkgo, horse chestnut, panax ginseng, poplar, red clover, turmeric, and willow.

Cloves are comprised of the phytochemicals: eugenol (72-90%), acetyl eugenol, beta-caryophyllene, vanillin, crategolic acid, tannins, such as bicornin, gallotannic acid, methyl salicylate, the flavonoids eugenin, kaempferol, rhamnetin, and eugenitin, triterpenoids such as oleanolic acid, stigmasterol, and campesterol and several sesquiterpenes.

Important precautions and warnings from the video

  1. Do not eat more than 3 cloves per day. Higher doses can irritate your stomach and cause discomfort.
  2. If you are on blood thinning medication, you must avoid this remedy as cloves can increase the risk of bleeding.
  3. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should always consult a doctor before trying this.
  4. And finally, always soak or chew cloves slowly. Never swallow them whole. They may be too strong for your stomach lining and may pose a choking hazard.

What I did

For my experiment (that continues beyond the 1-week suggested by the video at the end of the article) I used True Organic Ceylon Cloves Whole, 1 lb, Premium Grade, USDA Organic & Kosher Certified, Non-GMO, Fresh Organic Cloves Bulk, Ceylon Premium Quality (16 Ounces) (ANP Amazon Link).

I put 2 crushed cloves in my soursop tea (VIDA FARM 50 Premium Soursop Tea Bags, 100% Natural Pure Soursop Leaves: Pleasant Taste, Natural Flavor, Caffeine Free, Hojas de Guanabana Para te, Dried Graviola Leaves Guyabano Tea ANP Amazon Link) in an 18 ounce insulated mug, added hot water, let steep 5 to 10 minutes, then removed the tea bag.

After I finished drinking the clove-flavored soursop tea, I left the cloves in the mug and made my regular hot tea (Bigelow Tea Decaffeinated Earl Grey Black Tea, Decaf Tea, 20 Count Box (Pack of 6), 120 Total Tea Bags ANP Amazon link). Once I finished that 2 cups of tea, I chewed and swallowed the remaining clove bits.

The author of the video is the Senior Health Hub and the video begins by asking "what if you ate just two cloves every day for a full week?" The video predicts:

On day one and two, you will likely notice improved digestion. You may feel less bloated and experience a lighter, more comfortable stomach after meals.

By day three and four, the powerful antibacterial effects become noticeable. Your breath will be fresher and you might experience reduced gum inflammation and better oral health.

On day five, many people report a boost in circulation. You may feel a pleasant warmth in your hands and feet as blood flow improves.

By day six, your immune system gets a significant boost. If you had mild cold symptoms or congestion, you might find your breathing becomes easier and clearer.

And finally, on day seven, you could see a noticeable increase in your overall energy levels.

Many people also report reduced sugar cravings and even clearer, healthier looking skin.

My results

I can definitely state that on days 1 & 2, I noticed a change in digestion . . . for the better. I felt, during the first 2 days, that I was doing a "painless purge" (remembering cloves are a an anti-parasite remedy from my May 11, 2025 ANP Article What Ails You? It Could Be Parasites. How Would You Know and How Do You Get Rid of Them? I was not surprised).

I did notice a change in my breath by day 4. My mouth did not taste as 'foul' upon awakening.

I did notice a change in the temperature of my hands and feet (right now I'm not even wearing socks and my feet feel warm - and this from a person who wears socks even in the heat of summer) around day 7.

I do seem to have more energy. I'm not feeling as exhausted and in need of mid-day naps.

Since I did the parasite cleanse (discussed in my May 11, 2025 ANP Article), I have not experienced sugar cravings. However, I do see where using cloves would cut sugar cravings as they are anti-parasitic and I associate sugar cravings with parasites.

I have not noticed any changes in my skin at this time.

Other ways to use cloves

The video also provides 15 ways to target specific health concerns using cloves:

  1. For digestion and bloating, make a simple clove tea. Boil three to four cloves in a cup of water for 5 minutes. Drink it warm after meals to relieve gas, cramps, and indigestion.
  2. For diabetes and blood sugar, try clove water. Soak two cloves overnight in a glass of water. Drink this first thing in the morning on an empty stomach to help regulate blood sugar and reduce insulin spikes.
  3. For colds and cough, a clove and honey remedy is perfect. Crush two cloves and mix them with one teaspoon of raw honey. Take this before sleep to clear your throat, relieve coughing, and ease breathing.
  4. For toothache and gum problems, use a clove oil massage. Mix two drops of clove oil with one teaspoon of coconut oil. Gently apply this mixture to your gums or the painful tooth to numb pain and reduce bacteria.
  5. For arthritis and joint pain. A warm clove balm can provide relief. Heat two tablespoons of olive oil and add five crushed cloves. Let it infuse, then strain the oil. Massage the warm oil onto your knees or stiff joints to improve circulation and reduce inflammation.
  6. For heart and blood circulation, drink clove and ginger tea. Boil two cloves and a thin slice of ginger in hot water for 5 minutes. Drink this in the morning to improve blood flow, warm the body, and strengthen your heart.
  7. For immunity and energy, make a clove and cinnamon mix. Grind two cloves with a small piece of cinnamon stick. Add this powerful powder to your smoothies, oatmeal, or even your coffee for a daily immune boost.
  8. For stress and anxiety, prepare a clove inhalation therapy. Add three to four crushed cloves to a bowl of steaming hot water. Lean over the bowl. Cover your head with a towel and inhale the fragrant steam deeply for five to 10 minutes. The eugenol acts as a natural relaxant for the nervous system, helping to calm the mind and reduce feelings of stress.
  9. For sinus congestion and headaches, create a clove steam inhaler. Follow the same method as for stress (see #8) , but add a teaspoon of dried mint or eucalyptus leaves to the hot water with Inhaling this potent antiseptic and anti-inflammatory steam will help open up blocked sinuses, drain mucus, and relieve sinus headache pressure.
  10. For skin fungus and athletes foot, make a potent antifungal clove soak. Brew a strong clove tea by boiling 10 cloves in two cups of water for 10 minutes. Let it cool completely. Soak clean feet in this tea for 20 minutes daily. The powerful antifungal properties of eugenol will help combat stubborn skin infections effectively.
  11. For nausea and motion sickness, try a clove and lemon elixir. Steep two crushed cloves and a slice of lemon in a cup of boiling water for 10 minutes. Sip this soothing drink slowly. The combination is highly effective in settling an upset stomach and preventing nausea without drowsiness.
  12. For lower back pain and muscle spasms, use a warming clove and mustard oil liniment. Gently heat half a cup of mustard oil. Add 10 to 12 crushed cloves and heat on low for 5 minutes. Let it cool, then strain. Use this oil to massage the painful area. It deeply penetrates muscles, relieves spasms, and reduces inflammation.
  13. For sore throat and laryngitis, gargle with a clove and salt water solution. Crush two cloves and add them to a glass of warm water with half a teaspoon of sea salt. Gargle with this mixture for 30 seconds three to four times a day. This provides intense antibacterial action and soothes inflamed throat tissues directly.
  14. For improved memory and focus, incorporate a clove and walnut brain tonic. Blend two crushed cloves with a handful of walnuts and a cup of milk or plant-based milk until smooth. Drink this regularly. Cloves improve circulation to the brain while walnuts provide omega-3s, creating a powerful cognitive enhancer.
  15. For bad breath, halitosis. Use a whole clove as a natural breath freshener. Simply place one clove in your mouth and gently suck on it. You can chew lightly to release the oils. Its strong antibacterial properties will kill odor-causing bacteria in your mouth for hours, acting like a natural breath mint.

Bottom line?

If you are not allergic to cloves, I would highly recommend the 7-day trial (remembering that I am NOT a medical professional and my recommendation is simply "I tried it and it worked for me"). As for me, I continue with my 2 cloves regimen as described above.
