As the leftist media blares headlines similar to an Axios title of "2020's red states have higher murder rates," they completely ignore that it is blue cities, those run by democrat mayors that push those "state" numbers.
The murder rates in Trump-voting states from 2020 have exceeded those in Biden-voting states every year since 2000, according to a new analysis by ThirdWay, a center-left think tank.
Center-left aka liberal think tank.
In many so-called red states, those which often vote Republican in presidential election, some of the largest cities in those states have democrat mayors. Less prosecutions, giving credence to the claim democrats are soft on crime. Drug-related crime far higher than the cities run by Republicans. Sanctuary city status offered in many cities run by liberals, spending money on illegal immigrants rather than cleaning up their streets.
That and much more will be addressed below.
Before digging into the reports and data, a shoutout to two of our regular readers for the headline and the image used up above. IcyPeaceMaker posted the image, and Old Auslander responded with "Show me a woke city & I'll show you desolation & dystopia."
Both points are well made and happened to fit in with an article idea I had been working on and collecting reports and data for, and their comments gave me that last piece of the puzzle I had been looking for.

DESOLATION & DYSTOPIA
Epoch Times has an article showing that while murder rates across the U.S. were slightly down (4%) in 2022, they were "34 percent higher than it was in 2019, before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. "
A look at the cities that saw the largest increase in murder rates, we note both are run by democrat mayors, and one listed as "nonpartisan."
Other cities fared worse, with Raleigh, North Carolina, topping the homicide rate across all cities with an increase of 48 percent, followed closely by Lincoln, Nebraska, with a 38 percent rise.
Chandler, Arizona, came in at third with a 29 percent increase in homicides, followed by Seattle, Washington, with 14 percent, according to the study.
This theme is the rule, not the exception, which shows the intellectual dishonesty of the Axios writer by deliberately not noting what the cause of the rise in murder in "red" states mostly stems from.
Blue cities.
In November 2022, The Heritage put out a report titled "The Blue City Murder Problem" and their three key takeaways are as follows:
• The Left’s claim that America has a “red state murder problem” is misleading and deflects from “progressive” soft-on-crime policies that have wreaked havoc.
• New analysis of crime data shows that high-crime counties are governed largely by Democrats, driving up the crime rates in their otherwise red states.
• Lowering America’s rising crime rates requires that localities repudiate their pro-criminal, anti-victim policies that contribute to lawlessness in blue counties.
It isn't just murder though, as the "desolation & dystopia" can be seen in homeless, drug lined streets in other cities, once again, controlled by democrats.
'Last night I went to a bar in downtown San Francisco. It looked like a dystopia,' wrote Tandler.
'I saw hundreds of people folded over (likely high on Fentanyl), or sitting on the sidewalks smoking.
'Almost every person looked homeless. I felt scared to park and walk two blocks,' she wrote before launching into a nearly two-dozen tweet thread about the ruinous state of San Francisco.
On January 20, 2023, Fox News put a disturbing piece out about Philadelphia's "open-air drug crisis," which is "spiraling out of control."
"This fentanyl is coming across the border. Those fentanyl-precursor chemicals are coming from none other than China. They are coming to our streets and they are literally paralyzing our communities."
One drug addict Carter spoke with told her the horrors of addiction and witnessing other addicts in the area.
"If you notice all the wounds out here, I mean, there's, like, everybody's got wounds, amputees, more than not," the addict said, adding she has been in Kensington for about five years.
When asked about how Philadelphia addicts are sometimes described as "zombies," the woman said that everyone is a human being but that the moniker still fits at times.
"Yeah, we are people. We are, but we're also zombies. We're the living dead out here. It's terrible," she said.
Videos from Philadelphia of drug-ridden streets have been published for years, with nothing being done to stop the problem, which makes sense since there has not been a Republican Mayor there in five+ decades.
The mayorship of Philadelphia has been held by Democrats since 1952, with the only Republican in recent memory coming close to winning the position being Sam Katz, who in 1999 was less than half a percentage point away from being the first Republican mayor of Philadelphia elected in over 45 years.
America's Capitol, Washington, DC, sees a very violent start to 2023, as reported by NBC Washington, we see that thefts of cars are up 113%, robberies have increased by 57%, overall property crime -- which includes offenses such as burglary, theft and arson, are up 42% from the numbers at the beginning of 2022.
As you will see below, the homeless problem in DC has escalated as well.
Let us take a look at some numbers from New York, via Daily Caller:
"Gun violence killed over 37% more people across 20 police jurisdictions statewide from January through November 2022 than the average for those months over the previous five years, despite a relative decrease compared to 2021, according to New York State Criminal Justice Services Division data."
New York Governor, Katy Hochul. Party affiliation Democrat.
From WYRK we see that "New York City accounts for more than twice the rest of the state's incidents of violent crimes. There were 47,959 violent crimes committed in NYC, whereas there were 22,584 around the rest of the state."
NYC, New York: Mayor Eric Adams. Party affiliation Democrat.
The examples go on and on, but the pattern that emerges when researching the data is major population hubs run by democrats and liberal policies, are the cause of the murder/crime rate increases for entire states, democrat or Republican run.
