'Food Deserts' Are About To Explode All Across America As Grocery Food Chains Prepare To Close Dozens Of Stores From One End Of The Country To The Other

By Susan Duclos - All News Pipeline

Food deserts are described by Very Well Health as "lower-income communities that lack access to nutritious, affordable food. Instead of grocery stores or farmers markets, these areas have corner stores or gas stations with limited shelf space for anything other than packaged foods that are convenient and shelf-stable. More often than not, these foods are unhealthy."

That is about to change very quickly after four years under the Biden regime and the inflation that made it impossible for some families to afford three full meals a day, even when not considered a "food desert."

While some prices are going down, to the consternation of President Trump's critics, a lack of access to foods other than "convenience" type stores selling absolute garbage is now spreading into areas not considered "low income," but rather middle class areas, because thousands of grocery store, as well as other types of retailers, closed in 2024.

In 2025, that pattern is continuing with the announcement of nine major grocery store chains are shuttering multiple locations this year, 2025.

Unfortunately, things are only going to get worse from here. Coresight Research also issued a grave prediction that 2025 is set to see even more closures, with as many as 15,000 stores closing its doors this year. Grocery stores are set to take a particular hit, and some of your favorites may be more in trouble than you think. Giants like Walmart, Kroger, and Albertsons are set to close several stores in 2025, and others are following suit. Let's take a look at some of the major chains set to shut some of their doors.

The national media will instantly blame President Trump's tariffs, which is why we highlighted and linked to the 2024 closures, well before Trump took over as President.

Some key data and reports from Daily Meal.

Walmart: closing a number of its stores in California throughout 2025, with others in Georgia and Ohio shutting up shop.

In an earnings call in January 2025, Albertsons' leaders stated that they would be looking to close some stores over the coming year as part of a streamlining effort.

In late January, Kroger announced the closure of its Belle Meade Plaza store in Nashville, Kroger will also see its Sterling Ridge location close in The Woodlands, Texas, with a planned final operation date of May 6.

Winn-Dixie:Two stores in Columbus and Phenix City have announced their closures in April and May, while others in Fort Lauderdale, Jackson, and Orlando have begun the conversion process into Aldis.

Safeway: 2025 looks to be an incredibly tough year for the supermarket chain, with its stores closing across the country at warp speed.

Shaw's store closures in Gloucester, Massachusetts and Concord, New Hampshire were announced in mid-March, with employees being relocated to nearby locations.

Amazon Fresh: In March 2025, the chain announced the closure of two of its stores California and Virginia, with the Virginia branch to close pretty much immediately and the California one to shut at the end of April.

Piggly Wiggly: 2025 will see several of its branches closing... - Things got even worse from there on in, with a beloved Piggly Wiggly in Columbia, South Carolina announcing that it was shutting its doors for the final time in March

Dollar Generalto close 96 of its stores by the start of 2026.

ANP EMERGENCY!!-Since the passing of Stefan Stanford, ANP's financial situation has become dire.Without significant contributions, the future of All News PipeLine, and our ability to stay online, is in danger. Anything at allANP readers can do to help usishugely appreciated.)

Some of those listed above are limited to certain areas of the country, while others are spread throughout the nation, but every closures provides one less place to buy food at reasonable prices and to be able to obtain healthier foods like fruits and vegetables.

Dollar stores became popular for many during the Biden years, with some doing the majority of their grocery shopping at them due to their prices which were lower than most regular grocery stores.

Ditto for Walmart.

We are seeing calls from liberals to open "public grocery stores," which would be government owned, such as New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani.

From thefar left New Republic:

A novel solution to give Americans better access to fresh food is picking up steam across the country: government-owned, government-operated grocery stores. Such stores are touted by proponents as a way to provide groceries to so-called food deserts: communities that have been abandoned by for-profit stores that decided they werent worth the investment. But to succeed, public stores have to find ways to compete with the big chains that dominate the industry, keeping costs and prices low.

New York, being one of the most liberal states in the U.S., might go for it, but it is doubtful most Americans want the government in control of their ability to eat, or the prices of food products, especially with the waste and fraud being highlightedby DOGE (Department Of Government Efficiency). For some it would seem to be just another way for the state governments to track the habits of their constituents.

As mentioned above, some prices for food are going down, but others remain stubbornly high, such as beef. Due to ranchers selling off a couple years ago, that is something that was expected, and ANP warned about it back in November of 2023. It takes time to rebuild the stock after a cattle production collapse, withbeef cows in the US hitting the lowest number since 1962.

Via Market Place:

In February, beef was up nearly 2.5% from January. And of course, eggs were up nearly 10.5%. Meanwhile, lots of categories were down. Bacon fell more than 2%, fruits and vegetables 0.5%.

The good news is that food inflation came in at 0% in February (March's numbers aren't in yet), and more prices are falling than rising, so finally things are starting to head in the right direction, but prices at the grocery stores that are staying open are still far too high.

Hard to turn around years of constant inflation in less than three months. Most Americans understand that, despite the media bias and attacks on President Trump, but patience isn't the issue, depleted bank accounts are, so things are still tough.

LEARN TO LOVE FREEZE DRIED EGGS AND BEEF.....

For those that want a nice juicy steak, be prepared for the prices to stay high until cattle production numbers start rising again, but for those that like meaty casseroles, or stews, soups, or a handful of meat on salads, learn to season and love freeze dried beef.

Same goes for eggs, even though wholesale prices are down, it hasn't been reflected widely at grocery stores across the country.

BOTTOM LINE.....

It is going to take time to lower the food prices to the point where families can eat properly again, but with many stores closing and creating more and more "food deserts," getting nutritional meals for many seems a long way off.
