I reached out Tuesday night to someone I've known for decades who has long worked as an administrator in a major hospital here in America to ask them what they thought about the threat of coronavirus in the US hospital system and if they believed we were prepared to handle something that has the very real potential of turning into a disaster and got back some very interesting answers that we'll share here with you today hoping to give you another perspective about what's now happening here.
Immediately mentioning to me that all international colleges here in America need to be on the lookout because college students, most of whom got out of school in December for Christmas and the holidays, have just returned from their home countries for the Spring semester, as Breitbart reported in this new story, China has the most US student visas, nearly half a million in 2018, with over 8,000 of those students from Wuhan back in 2012 according to this Brookings Institute study.
Also bringing up to me another very interesting fact which troubled them that Susan and I hadn't thought of, that while SARS and MERS are both 'coronaviruses'that killed people, neither one of those'outbreaks' required the same kind of 'mass quarantines' that we're now seeing in China, they then told me why this 'outbreak', while still hugely limited here in America and around most of the world, had the potential to turn into a nightmare.
Emphasizing heavily to me that this has the potential to become a huge problem due to the fact that this disease can lay hidden within people for up to 14 days, yet during those days the carrier will be contagious to others who become infected and then repeat the cycle, I was told this is why the flu and the common cold often spread so quickly and affect such a large population during some illness outbreaks, because people are contagious to others without even showing symptoms yet spending much time in close proximity to each other. And this coronavirus has many of the same symptoms as the flu or cold. So how many people might end up catching the virus and walking around, infecting others, having no idea they even have it?
And with the same previously mentioned Brookings Institute Survey finding that 73% of international college students in America lived in the big cities and metropolitan areas where many 'international universities' are, according to this January 27th story over at Inside Higher Ed, the coronavirus had already arrived on US campuses with a student in Arizona who recently traveled to Wuhan, a student from Baylor University in Texas who had also traveled to Wuhan and a Tennessee Tech U student who tested negative for the virus providing recent scares.
So with coronavirus here in America and the very real potential that it spreads due to it's up-to-14-day-window where a person can be contagious to others without showing any symptoms themselves, short of giving us another reason to 'bug out' to the mountains or the country, we'll also be taking a look below at what some experts say is the best way to weather a 'cytokine storm', what happens when our own body's immune system's turn against itself, what health experts say has been responsible for killing the most people from coronavirus now in China and what health experts say was responsible for killing many people during the 1918-1920 Spanish Flu.
As this story over at the US News and World Report informs us, the Wuhan coronavirus closely resembles the 2003 SARS outbreak with many of the same symptoms being suffered by those who have been stricken by the disease with what is called a 'cytokine storm' leading to the deaths of many of those who've already died.
As Science Daily News had reported back in 2014, a 'cytokine storm' can be triggered when our own immune systems over-react and attack our own bodies when attempting to kill-off an unknown virus, causing tremendous inflammation within our organs that often leads to death. From that Science Daily News paper.
Scientists have mapped key elements of a severe immune overreaction -— a “cytokine storm” -— that can both sicken and kill patients who are infected with certain strains of flu virus. A cytokine storm is an overproduction of immune cells and their activating compounds (cytokines), which, in a flu infection, is often associated with a surge of activated immune cells into the lungs. The resulting lung inflammation and fluid buildup can lead to respiratory distress and can be contaminated by a secondary bacterial pneumonia -- often enhancing the mortality in patients.
This little-understood phenomenon is thought to occur in at least several types of infections and autoimmune conditions, but it appears to be particularly relevant in outbreaks of new flu variants. Cytokine storm is now seen as a likely major cause of mortality in the 1918-20 "Spanish flu" -- which killed more than 50 million people worldwide -- and the H1N1 "swine flu" and H5N1 "bird flu" of recent years. In these epidemics, the patients most likely to die were relatively young adults with apparently strong immune reactions to the infection -- whereas ordinary seasonal flu epidemics disproportionately affect the very young and the elderly.
While according to The Lancet, the clinical features of the first 41 patients admitted to hospitals in Wuhan for Coronavirus found the median age of those originally infected to be 49 years old, with less than half of them suffering from underlying diseases, all 41 developed pneumonia with six dying of those original 41, nearly 15%.
And while The Lancet story also reported believed links of the Wuhan outbreak to a nearby seafood market with 27 of those 41 having been to the Huanan Seafood Market, as the Washington Times had reported in this January 26th story, this outbreak may also have originated from a covert China bioweapons laboratory, the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Conveniently, or not, the Wuhan Institute of Virology is less than 20 miles away from the Huanan Seafood Market. From the Washington Times story.
The deadly animal-borne coronavirus spreading globally may have originated in a laboratory in the city of Wuhan linked to China’s covert biological weapons program, said an Israeli biological warfare analyst.
Radio Free Asia last week rebroadcast a Wuhan television report from 2015 showing China’s most advanced virus research laboratory, known the Wuhan Institute of Virology. The laboratory is the only declared site in China capable of working with deadly viruses.
Dany Shoham, a former Israeli military intelligence officer who has studied Chinese biological warfare, said the institute is linked to Beijing’s covert bio-weapons program.
“Certain laboratories in the institute have probably been engaged, in terms of research and development, in Chinese [biological weapons], at least collaterally, yet not as a principal facility of the Chinese BW alignment,” Mr. Shoham told The Washington Times. Work on biological weapons is conducted as part of dual civilian-military research and is “definitely covert,” he said in an email.
The Wuhan institute has studied coronaviruses including the strain that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), H5N1 influenza virus, Japanese encephalitis and dengue. Researchers at the institute also have studied the germ that causes anthrax, a biological agent once developed in Russia.
“Coronaviruses [particularly SARS] have been studied in the institute and are probably held therein,” Mr. Shoham said. “SARS is included within the Chinese BW program, at large, and is dealt with in several pertinent facilities.”
So while we absolutely have no control over what happens globally or here in America when it comes to the spread of the coronavirus, we can absolutely take steps to prepare for what we might do should it strike us here in America and preparing to ward off a 'cytokine storm' is what we'll look at in the closing segment below.
While many people might attempt to kill off the symptoms of a virus such as suppressing a high fever, as this 2009 story over at Natural News reported, fever's have a very good purpose; they are attempting to kill off the virus, not just the symptoms.
Aspirin type medications may be needed for pain reduction, but when it comes to reducing fever from influenza of any type, taking an over the counter drug to reduce fever is not the way to go. Suppressing fevers can increase rapid viral replication, resulting in a berserk effort by an overwhelmed immune system to fight back. This is known as a cytokine storm, which can have disastrous results.
What Fever Is Actually About
This section gets a tad technical. According to former NASA scientist, researcher, and editor for www.brojon.org, Marshall Smith explains in his article "The Tamiflu Myth" that "The body causes a fever above 101 degrees which stops the telomeres on the ends of the virus from allowing any viral replication." [Note: Telomeres are chromosome caps to keep chromosome threads from randomly sticking together.]
Fever is the immune system's response in addition to sending T-Cells to fight antibodies. The T-Cells can kill bacterial pathogens. Those pathogens are killable by T-Cell attacks. Fevers are also part of the clean up process for toxic bacterial waste products.
Viruses are not living microorganisms that rummage about internally looking for food to scavenge, as bacteria do. A virus does not have a nucleus cell that divides to create more microbes, as bacteria do. The body's thalamus/thyroid reaction raises the temperature slightly, and that stops viruses from replicating.
So instead of trying to make symptoms such as a high fever go away, we'll instead turn our attention to preparing to kill off any viruses that make it our way, using our bodies own self-defense mechanism of a fever to kill it off, just as Gramma used to do. From this story over at Texas Hill Country:
Because of the fact that heat kills viruses and bacteria, use any form you have at your fingertips in food, blankets, water, such as hot baths.
Confuse the virus in your body. Curry in particular, along with hot peppers work their magic. Heat in your body when you have the flu or a cold is your army. (GARLIC also is incredibly 'hot' and has long killed off viruses!)
At the first sign of fever, Grannie or Mom would grab blankets and wrap us in them. We had to breathe the warm air and were not allowed to turn on the fan as the air whisks away the heat, which is the best defense. Drink some hot tea with lemon and honey added. Eventually, you will break out in a sweat, and this timing is very important.
First, it usually means your fever has broken, but also, it means that the virus has been greatly diminished. Do not throw off your covers. Let the heat continue to battle and kill your enemy, the virus. You will probably feel rather weak and shaky as you recover from the hours of heat, but your body will recover quickly. Don’t forget your vitamin C.
Cytokines are compounds naturally produced by the immune system of people and pets that attack and remove foreign bodies, which generally protect us from disease and infection. The problem is that when a foreign particle is immune to a certain cytokine, your body thinks that its immune response is not working properly and therefore tries even harder to remove the foreign particle.
This response often leads to what is termed a “cytokine storm.” A Cytokine Storm occurs when the body becomes overwhelmed with these compounds, which ultimately overwhelm the body and lead to complete destruction of the person or pet, with a fatal outcome.
Many young lives were lost in part due to cytokine storms causing over-reactive immune systems during the former “Spanish Flu” pandemic that occurred 40 years ago. Consuming foods that suppress the production of cytokines TNF-a and IL-6 and enhance the production of those that are effective against the virus helps infected individuals recover naturally.
It is also a good idea to avoid eating foods, like dairy products and bananas that naturally stimulate mucous production in your airways and respiratory system. Mucous production which in most cases acts to protect us is detrimental to anyone infected with Swine Flu because mucous is the Swine Flu virus’s favorite place to breed and multiply. Over production of mucous makes breathing even more difficult for Flu patients and ads to their discomfort, suffering and demise.
Natural Foods and Herbal Remedies Helpful to Treat and Prevent the Flu
Certain alternative remedies can act as natural, effective anti-virals. They boost your immune system, decrease the production of toxic cytokines TNF-a and IL-6 and help not only to treat but also to prevent the flu.
Garlic (allicin): Garlic is a very effective antiviral. It is most effective in its raw form and needs to be crushed. It must be consumed within 1 hour of crushing. The initial dose is 2 to 3 cloves daily, and this is gradually decreased until no body odor occurs. There are no toxic effects in people. Pets including dogs and cats should not use this as garlic fed continually leads to a decrease in red blood cell production which results in anemia. Vitamin C:
Vitamin C boosts the immune system and acts as antiviral by blocking the enzyme neuraminadase. Viruses need neuraminadase to reproduce. There are anecdotal stories of people that took large amounts of Vitamin C and lived through the Spanish Flu pandemic. Vitamin C may also be effective by reducing the body’s natural production of two cytokines, TNF-a and IL-6. Another study also validated the effectiveness of taking Vitamin C when flu is suspected. In this report, a group of 470 people took 1000 milligrams of Vitamin C every hour for six hours in a row, and then took 1000 milligrams of Vitamin C 3 times a day. They experienced an 85% decrease in flu symptoms.
Green Tea may be used as an alternative to the current anti-viral medications, Tamiflu and Relenza. Green tea catechins act as effective antivirals. They decrease the production of the cytokine TNF-a, inhibit neuraminidase and may have antiviral activity equivalent to other antivirals including Tamiflu. St. John’s Wort (Hypericum):
St. John’s Wort is an effective antiviral. Hypericum, the active ingredient in St. John’s Wart decreases the production cytokine IL-6. There have also been some promising results with this substance in research trials conducted in commercial flocks of birds infected with the H5N1 strain of the Bird Flu virus conducted in Vietnam.
Herbs that have strong anti-viral properties may also protect against cytokine storms. A cytokine storm can both sicken and kill patients who are infected with certain strains of flu virus.
The storm occurs when an overproduction of immune cells and their activating compounds (cytokines), surge these activated immune cells into the lungs. The resulting lung inflammation and fluid buildup can lead to respiratory distress which can be contaminated by a secondary bacterial pneumonia. This is what often leads to death.
Clearly, avoiding a cytokine storm is very important. Anti-viral herbs can help.
