Nuclear Regulatory Commission Dragging Their Feet On New Reactors, Likely Due To The Politics Of Windmills And Solar Versus Nuclear Energy

By Madeline Ford - All News Pipeline

As I understand from reading the recent article of May 24, 2025 by S.E. Gunn,President Trump Goes Nuclear Ordering The Reform Of The Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Reinvigorating The Nuclear Base, And Restoring The Gold Standard In Scientific Research; But What About Yucca Mountain?the NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) is hell bent on red tape & slowing down or halting the of building new reactors 'cuz it needs to be ABSOLUTELY certain to THEIR satisfaction that it's safe. (Really? I'd like to know what the members of the NRC's qualifications are to make them more expert on the subject than the scientists who've been actually working on this.) Even AFTER all tests & modern scientific research & testing the modern plants have been deemed it to be safe, the NRC is still dragging their feet. (Hmm. Wonder if it has anything to do with certain political individuals who have touting wind mills & solar vs nuclear power? Solyndra anyone?)

The new plants would be nothing like the 3 Mile Island Generating plant built in 1968 & followed by it's meltdown 1979. Nuclear science has learned a lot in the last 40+ yrs about the subject and the power plants. Technology has grown a lot since 1968 and 1979 and field scientists have figured out how to do this safely.

QUESTION: How many nuclear submarines does the Navy have? How many of those nuclear submarines have had 'melt-downs' or had sailors (who happen to be 'sealed' in a steel tube under the water with the the nuclear reactor that powers those subs) got sick or have died due to nuclear radiation exposure? Seems awful damn funny that we can build workable nuclear submarines w/o a problem to the sailors living right next to the nuclear power source but we can't build a surface nuclear reactors that could power cities & have a safe population. Hmm. That's a bit of a head scratcher for me. Seems to me that IF there is a concern re: "surface built reactors" one just might consider checking with the Navy & the submarine builders to see how it's done.

S.E. Gunn went on to discuss Nuclear waste & Yucca Mountain... the DOE has stated that although (paraphrased) "there are many small fault lines that run thru the Yucca mountain area, there is potential for earth quakes & an eruption from dormant volcanos in the area. However characteristics of the rock would not be changed significantly by seismic events that may occur in the next 10,000 yrs"

ANP FUNDING EMERGENCY!!

Since the passing of Stefan Stanford, ANP's financial situation has become dire.

Without significant contributions,
the future of ANP, and our ability to stay online,
is in danger.

Anything ANP readers can do to help us is hugely appreciated

An article from the Las Vegas Review Journal, June 30, 2011 by Keith Rogers Scientists prepare to debate danger of Yucca Mountains volcanic neighborsincluded this cross section of the Yucca Mountain area & note from scientists. (I know, the note is kinda hard to read, so HERE is the original picture) but it gives you the 'layout' of the area.

Scientist who have studied the area say that the cones nearby (Black cone & Red cone) the *proposed repository site* formed between 900,000 & 1 million yrs ago, but suggest that future eruptions are possible!

Eugene Smith, professor emeritus of geology at UNLV, said in the article, that "One cone known as Lathrop Wells, a cinder-rock mine site near the fringe of Crater Flat, 8 miles south of Yucca Mountain, 'is really young' & last sent lava across the desert floor about 70,000 to 80,000 yrs ago."

Really? I'm reading a lot of suggestions, possibilities, future eruptions, theories from all these experts regarding the dangers of Yucca Mountain. It is also possible that *sometime in the future* the Earth could be invaded by Klingons!

But speaking of possible devastating volcanic eruptions--consider the Yellowstone caldera. Now THAT is indeed a super volcano & we know it for sure! Yellowstone is and has been for a long time just a-bubblin' & squirtin' on a regular basis. Now should Yellowstone erupt, and it probably will one day (though it too hasn't erupted for around 70,000 yrs), it does have the potential of covering about 1/2 of the western states in about 500 feet of ash & rock and definitely affecting the climate around the world! (Think Krakatoa eruption in Indonesia in 1883 that sent ash to London! Yellowstone would make that look like fireworks on the 4th of July!)

But let's get back to Yucca Mountain. What's interesting to me, comparing Yellowstone to Yucca is that the Crater Flat Caldera, where Yucca Mountain is located is just sittin' there quiet as a sleeping baby. It too hasn't had an eruption in about 70,000 yrs. Therefore, IMO, it would be ideal as a nuclear waste storage facility.

JMO, but I'd say the odds of either one of 'em blowing their tops any time soon would be about a million to one in any of OUR lifetimes! Living in Vegas, I think those are pretty good odds! And with those odds, don't think any of us living today would be around to worry about it! WHO KNOWS?? By the time either of 'em blew it's possible that future generations of scientists (who know what they're talkin' about) would have solved the problem of what to do with the expended nuclear waste, knew where it was buried, dug it up found a use for it, destroyed it, deposited it more safely or blew it out into space or something. Again, not OUR worries!

I'm not a nuclear or research scientist & I'm expressing mostly my opinions here but I know some people who are. I've spoken with them at great length about the matter. I've been there--to Yucca Mountain. I've seen it. I've walked thru those tunnels in the mountain (that BTW have already cost taxpayers in the neighborhood of $15 Billion to cut into the mountain). I've seen the side rooms where the storage containers would be placed. I've seen the steel & concrete storage containers to be used. I also live about an hour and a half from the mountain. I'm not concerned that the place is gonna blow & that I & everyone I know will be killed by released radiation. Heck, everything has to be somewhere and IMO, Yucca Mountain is the best & safest place to store this junk. It's a heck of a lot safer living in the shadow of the nuclear waste depository than it is living in New York City, Chicago or Washington D.C.

Just my thoughts on the matter.
