A Shocking Sixty Percent Of All Fresh Fruit And 38% Of Fresh Vegetables Sold In The U.S. Are Imported From Foreign Nations, Time To Start Growing Your Own
Taking a minute away from the maddening world of politics for a minute, it is Spring and time for some time in the sun, planting our gardens and finally being done with snow for those of us living in states that have suffered through a brutal Winter.
Granted, politics have a little to do with the need to be more proactive in growing your own food this year and although many of the reports President Trump's about immigration policies causing a rise in cost for certain foods grown in the U.S. come from left leaning sources trying to create fear over Trump's agenda, an objective look shows that some prices may rise for U.S. grown food products, but worth it to have Americans doing jobs associated with farming, instead of using illegal aliens who get paid less.
"The price of domestically produced food items will also go up as U.S. agricultural farms suffer from labor shortages," Elahee says. "A large proportion of U.S. agricultural workers are undocumented immigrants. The deportation of undocumented immigrants is causing a further shortage of agricultural labor, thereby pushing the wages of existing farm workers. Such higher wages will translate into higher prices for agricultural produce and food items that are grown or made in the U.S."
Undocumented immigrants they call them. The appropriate and legal terms are illegal immigrants andillegal aliens.
Also with beef prices spiking due to low inventories, growing your own frits and vegetables can save money at the grocery store for fresh produce and allow that money to be used for beef products for those that have to have their beef!
Here is another shocking statistic garnered from another left-leaning source complaining about President Trump's tariffs, but the data itself about this point, is objective, as specific statistical data has no inherent bias.
Sixty percent of all fresh fruit and 38% of fresh vegetables sold in the U.S. were imported from other countries as of 2021, according to the USDA.
How is that possible with so many farming communities in America? That is an article in and of itself, but the bottom line is the same, it isn't just manufacturing that has been offshored over the decades, it is also our fresh produce supply.
That isn't going to change overnight, it will take years if not decades to turn those numbers around, so in the meantime Americans should be growing as much as possible, and for those in cold climates, when the summer is over, indoor vegetable gardening will be a must.

No matter how much space one has, inside or outside, to grow, unless we do want to be totally dependent on foreign government for our fresh produce, growing all our own is going to be the only way to prevent that.
A handful of freeze dried meats, which most preppers already have so I won't be linking to those in this piece, and homegrown veggies can be used to make casseroles, stews, soups, salads and more, can be the difference between independence and being completely dependent on foods from other countries.
So, some planting links, and books for those new to prepping.
For outdoor, or indoor if space allows, garden beds of all sizescan be found that can be utilized to get as much grown as possible for the space being worked with.
Plant grow bags are also a space-saving and easy way to grow everything from potatoes to tomatos to carrots, etc.
It is a shame that the U.S. depends so heavily on foreign nations for our fresh produce, but it is what it is, for now at least. Fresh vegetables and fruits that are grown in the U.S. will see prices rise, which is the price we pay for deporting those in the U.S. illegally, so fresh produce will be hit by a double whammy.
When prices rise, those growing their own produce will be the ones not affected by it near as much as those that depend on the grocery store for everything they eat.
