A Huge Wake-Up Call - Coronavirus & Prepping Go Hand-In-Hand: Reader Recommendations And Preparing For Supply Chain Disruptions As We Learn In China Some Cannot Leave Their Homes, Even For Groceries
While Stefan Stanford has been doing an outstanding job updating readers on new information about the Coronavirus, from "super spreaders" to possible martial law as we are seeing in parts of China, where the virus originated, there is another aspect that I would like to cover.
ANP readers have also, as always, been a wonderful source of information, from suggestions, to links sharing every and any new report as they find it, to help other readers stay fully informed, as well as recommendations to help others get and stay prepared.
Before we touch on certain points such as what ANP readers are utilizing the most, and then the need to prepare for what is assuredly going to be a supply chain disruption, whether large or small, and the need for prevention and protections, there are a few points we would like to make.
• One: While we do provide Amazon affiliate links, which we do make pennies on the dollar for, if a reader has the means to get the same product from a store close to their location, for a better price, we encourage the readers to do so.
It does not matter where readers get what they need to protect themselves from this virus or even just colds and flu during the season, all that matters is that they have that protection. If like us, and there is no access to a store without a long drive, the ease of delivery may be handy.
• Two: While we can access the products bought from the affiliate links we do not have access to any personal information i.e. CC information, address or name of buyer. The whole reason we use affiliate systems is because we do not want your personal information. Heck, companies with far bigger websites than ours, with the ability for the best protections, have seen data breaches over the past few years, so we don't want responsibility for keeping personal information.
• Three: Last but not least, we are listing the products that readers have gravitated to, have bought, in bulk at times, using their favoring one over another as our basis for recommendation. Many ANP readers are preppers, some newer and some have been prepping for years, so who better to recommend certain products than them?
HEALTH: PREVENTION AND PROTECTION
The most ordered products, by far, are the ones used to prevent the spread, and protect against, the Coronavirus (or colds and flu) should it appear in a city or neighborhood near you, from cleaning products to masks and gloves. This is not as unlikely as some might think as we have a reader lives within miles of one of the people in the U.S. tested for the Coronavirus.
The top recommendations from purchased products are, hands down, the disinfectants, refills, masks, gloves and disposable body suits. Links below listed in order of appearance in reader recommendation list. Some of the products listed were not on our original lists, but were recommended by purchase from the "related" list, so we made sure they were the same and chose the least expensive but still the same quality. In other words, there different links to the same exact product, all within dollars of each other, so we choose the least expensive to share below.
If readers have ordered and tried any of the products below, please share your opinion on which is best in your opinion, in the comment section.
Note: Makes absolutely no sense, but the gloves listed below have a less expensive price (and the same) for small and large than for medium, which is almost $15 more.
SUPPLY CHAIN DISRUPTION - HYDROPONICS, SUPER FOODS AND INDOOR GROWING
Recently Stefan covered the likelihood of supply chain disruptions especially since so many products are "made in China," and where they also supply the majority of medications to the U.S., so while other top links were a variety of Emergency Survival Foods, and Water Filtration Systems, we would prefer to think about long term as in, what would we do if we ran out of those supplies after a few months, or maybe the first year.
That brings us to super foods, hydroponics, being able to grow and maintain a garden indoors all year round so when winter hits, no one will starve.
Back in May 2019, Steve Quayle, who has been a proponent of prepping since before it became a thing, made some suggestions to us when asked what he thought was important but rarely addressed, and his suggestions were sprouting, hydroponics and stocking up on protein powders.
All excellent suggestions that we at ANP had never addressed either, proving that we can all learn something new.
• We'll start with sprouts, often described as a "miracle food" as they are healthy and nutrious, offer vitamin, mineral, amino acid and protein boosts, are affordable, requires no soil (perfect for apartment preppers with a limited amount of space), and offer a large variety, sprout seeds, beans, legumes or grains, and more.
The information on sprouting is out there if one knows what to look for and the easy process "involves germinating seeds and legumes, and then eating them raw," so they don't even have to be cooked, and most can be added to soups, stews, salads, among a number of other foods.
In researching sprouts we found that they can be grown in simple mason jars, or sprouting trays that barely take up any room and some sprouts can be ready to eat within a week. (Note - Some can take 10-20 days to harvest)
Hydroponics is a method of growing nutritious sprouts and other greens and vegetables that doesn't require soil. While researching this method, we were amazed to see how many different herbs, vegetables and greens can be grown using a hydroponics system. Lettuces, tomatoes, cucumbers, spinach and much more can offer decent yields, with no messy soil or the need for a full outside garden, and they can be grown all year round.
The great part of being able to grow sprouts, vegetables, fruits and greens indoors using hydroponics is that one is not limited by season or weather and can be harvested more rapidly than traditional gardening. The best part is using non-GMO seeds and growing your own food, you always know exactly what is in the food you are eating and how fresh it is.
With the massive amounts of food recalls in recent years due to listeria, salmonella and ecoli, growing your own food is also safer.
• Protein Powders: One of the best tips Steve offered in our email communications (although I found them all important) was the need to accumulate protein powders, which in hindsight should have been common sense, but it is something we rarely see addressed when talking about prepping and survival.
We have often linked to freeze dried meat packages, and with the long shelf life, they are still an awesome investment for survival, but when talking about long-term survival, when the possibility of no longer being able to refresh your supply due to food shortages, having a large accumulation of protein powders to simply mix up and drink, is not only imperative but is also an answer for those without a lot of storage space for those large emergency survival food buckets.
• Indoor growing: Don't wait until it is too late, learn about indoor growing and start now. Even if nothing ever happens, which is doubtful at this point, to our ability to obtain food, growing your own is healthier, and one knows exactly where it has been and who has touched it!
For those that absolutely have to have a little meat in with their foods, it might come in handy to have some freeze dried or canned meats to add to your homegrown vegetables, for stews, soups or other meals.
BOTTOM LINE - THIS CORONAVIRUS SCARE SHOULD BE A WAKE UP CALL
They could announce a cure for the recent COVID-19, which is what they named the recent Coronavirus, today and we would still consider this whole example of how fast a virus can spread and get out of control, as a huge wake up call.
Back in the pioneer days, everyone was a prepper, they grew much of their own foods, baked their own breads and didn't have a grocery store to run over to for food. Today, the majority of the country would not survive if that ability was removed.
This wake up call should teach all of us that preparing to protect and prevent from catching a virus, any virus, is just a smart, common sense thing to do, but that also preparing for any type of event that could disrupt our food supply chain, should also be a priority.
No one is suggesting going out and spending every penny you have.... but getting a little here, a little there is better than having nothing if SHTF.
Below the Patriot Nurse has some excellent suggestions on staying healthy, not just from this Coronavirus but during cold and flu season.
Look to China, at least two cities have banned people from leaving their homes, even to buy groceries, as we hear below from DW, German news.
