'This Is Already A Perfect Storm' Expert Warns - War Is Already Decimating An Already Depleted Food Supply, A Situation Which Is Rapidly Becoming Worse
On March 5, 2022, two things occurred one right after the other which encouraged me to publish this article a few days earlier than originally planned.
That article explained how "Governments around the world are taking steps to safeguard domestic food supplies after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine roiled trade and sent prices of key staples soaring."
Hungary is banning grain exports, its agriculture minister told television channel RTL on Friday. Argentina and Turkey also made moves this week to increase their control over local products. And Moldova, albeit a small shipper, temporarily halted exports of wheat, corn and sugar from this month.
Protectionist measures -- which already picked up in recent years as the Covid-19 pandemic sparked worries about local supplies and high prices -- could spell more bad news for global food trade. The war in Ukraine has brought crop shipments from much of the crucial Black Sea region to a halt, heightening fears of shortages of grain and sunflower oil.
The piece goes to list a number of other countries taking steps to protect their local products, which include the statement, "Argentina, a major grain shipper, is creating a mechanism to guarantee wheat supplies for local millers and tame pasta prices. Top flour exporter Turkey boosted the agriculture ministry’s authority over exports of an array of goods, allowing it to make “periodical arrangements” if needed."
Abdolreza Abbassian, an independent analyst, who has tracked agriculture markets for decades, says "This is already a perfect storm."
Second Instance: After reading that, I opened an email sent to ANP by a reader with images from their local Walmart in Idaho Falls, ID. The email is dated March 5, 2022.
The first image I saw, was quite coincidental after reading the article cited above:
Reader Image: Walmart, ID - Pasta Shelf
The reader also sent images of a couple canned food sections where we could see empty spaces indicative of food shortages.
In order to grasp exactly what that means for our food supply, I looked up what products are and will continue to be affected and the list of foods made from wheat is long.
(ANP EMERGENCY FUNDRAISER:Due to a heavy, new censorship campaign by 'big tech' upon ANP articles, we're being forced to run an emergency fundraising drive. The severity of the upcoming shortages, will depend on a number of factors, two main ones being the length of the war between Russia and Ukraine, and what limitations to exports are lifted once it is over....unless it leads to world war, then the limitation question becomes moot.
That leaves consumers with few options for short term, and long term.
• Buy whatever you can now, and if not available at your local grocers, buy online while items are still available. (The items are linked above)
• Stock up on huge bags of flour, whatever type you prefer, grab some how-to books, and learn to make your your own pastas, bread, noodles, biscuits, etc....
Recommended: Buy in bulk if possible. Once capable of baking your own breads and making your own pastas, that may end up being your preferred method. There is nothing like warm bread just taken out of the oven, slathered with butter or jelly.
An updated list from Taste Of Home on shortages being seen and expected to get worse, includes canned foods, due to a number of factors. Aluminum shortages, self-inflicted labor shortages from the lockdowns, and in many cases actual food shortages.
The empty holes found throughout the canned goods sections have become more frequent and appear to be getting bigger each time readers send in images, so get what you can, when you can.
Note: In this piece we linked to canned products, but a follow up piece will deal with learning to can, freeze dry or dehydrate what you grow, because it is time to start preparing for Spring gardening.
IMAGES of what differences you are seeing on the shelves of your local grocers can be sent to [email protected].
BOTTOM LINE
As we watch what happens globally affect what we see locally at our stores, on top of the already strained food supply chain, there is no way to overstate the importance of being prepared.
As I have said before, and I am sure I will again, if you are prepared for everything you can possible be prepared for, there is no need to worry or fear because you have done all that you can.
Be safe. Be Prepared.
God Bless.
